Understanding Source and Target Accounts

Understanding the relationship between source and target accounts will help you successfully merge duplicate objects in Active Directory.

The following table explains this relationship:

Account Description
Source account The object that is removed after the merge. The source account can be a contact, a disabled user, or an active user.

When selecting or reviewing source accounts, ensure you are selecting the account you want to merged with the target account.

Target account The account that remains after the merge and is limited to only active user accounts.

When selecting or reviewing target accounts, ensure you are selecting the account you want to remain after the merge.
