Determine if an Exchange Organization is in Mixed or Native Mode

When administering an Exchange organization, it is important to determine which mode the organization is in. This is because of the significant differences between operating in mixed and native mode.

To determine the mode of an existing organization:

1. Start System Manager
   On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
2. If you have more than one Exchange organization, in the console tree, expand the tree to expose the organization for which you want to determine the mode.
3. In the console pane, right-click the organization for which you want to determine the mode, and then click Properties. In Operations mode, the operating mode of the organization displays.

4. Important   If your organization is in native mode, you cannot change it back to mixed mode or install earlier versions of Exchange.
