Microsoft uses the standard WebDAV methods to direct the server how to process client requests. These methods connect the client to the data in a richer form than HTTP allows. HTTP only allows clients to read data, but WebDAV allows clients to modify and save the original document.

In addition to the standard WebDAV methods outlined in Request for Comments (RFC) 2518, Microsoft supports extensions to WebDAV that allow clients to access mailboxes and perform tasks associated with e-mail.
