Index Newsgroups

Indexing Service can extract information from newsgroup messages and organize the information to allow users to search newsgroup articles for specific text strings. Before you enable indexing of newsgroups, you must start Indexing Service, which Windows 2000 provides. For more information on Indexing Service, see the Windows 2000 online documentation.

To enable indexing for a newsgroup:

  1. Start Services
    On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. In the details pane, right-click Indexing Service, and then click Start if Indexing Service is not already running.
  3. Start System Manager
    On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  4. Navigate to Virtual Directories.

    1. Server
    2. Protocols
    3. NNTP
    4. Virtual server
    5. Virtual Directories
  5. In the details pane, in the newsgroup subtree, right-click a newsgroup, and then click Properties.
  6. On the General tab, select Index news content if it is not already selected.
  7. If you have newsgroups located in one or more virtual directories, repeat this process for each virtual directory.
