Understanding NNTP Virtual Server Performance

To monitor the overall performance of your NNTP virtual server, monitor processor and disk performance counters in addition to NNTP Service performance counters. The following performance counters provide advance warning of performance problems.

In Performance Monitor, when you add a new counter to collect data, you must select a Performance Object and one or more counters to get an indication of service activity. Use the following table for guidelines on which objects and counters to use with your computer running Exchange.

Performance Object Counter Recommended Operating Limits
Processor % Processor Time This value should be less than 75%.
Memory Available Bytes This value should be more than 4,200,000 bytes.
LogicalDisk % Free Space This value should always be greater than 0.

Tip   Set an alert at 10% to receive advance warning that you are running out of disk space.

If you have NNTP Service files located on more than one drive letter, create an instance of this counter for each drive letter.

LogicalDisk Avg. Disk Queue Length This value should be less than the number of disks in the computer's disk array. If you have newsgroup articles located on more than one drive letter, create an instance of this counter for each drive letter.

Important   Before adding counters in the LogicalDisk object, enable the collection of disk data by typing one of the following commands and restarting the computer:
