You can use Performance Monitor in Windows 2000 to monitor NNTP
Service. The performance counters for NNTP Service included with
Performance Monitor enable you to build charts and reports that
show critical performance data. In addition to charts and reports,
you can define alerts to notify you when monitored values exceed
thresholds that you specify. For more information, see the
Performance Monitor documentation provided with Windows 2000.
On the Start menu, point to
Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then
click Performance.
Expand Performance Logs and Alerts, and then click
Counter Logs.
In the details pane, right-click empty space, and then click
New Log Settings.
In Name, type a name for the log, and then click
OK.
On the General tab, click Add.
In Performance Object, select NNTP Commands.
Use the following performance counters for information about
logon failures:
Logon Attempts. The value of Logon Attempts should be
much greater than the value of Logon Failures.
Logon Failures. The value of Logon Failures should be a
small fraction of the value of Logon Attempts.
Logon Failures/Sec. This value is 0 if users are
successfully connecting.
Tip If high numbers of logon
failures occur, this can indicate that unauthorized users are
trying to gain access to your news site, or an indication of server
performance.
