Move a Database

Exchange databases can be moved to other directories. The databases are automatically dismounted during the move. Use System Manager on the server on which the databases reside to move the .edb and .stm files of the database. You must perform a full backup when the move is finished.

  1. Start System Manager
    On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. Open the Servers container in the console tree.

  3. Click the server on which the storage group containing the databases you want to move resides.
  4. Open the storage group container, right-click the store, and then click Properties.
  5. Click the Database tab.
  6. Under Exchange database, click Browse. In Save in, select the storage group to which you want to move the database. Click Open, and then click Save.
  7. Under Exchange streaming database, click Browse. In Save in, click the storage group to which you want to move the streaming database. Click Open, and then click Save.
  8. Click Apply. The following message appears:

    - change Exchange database location
    - change Exchange streaming database location
    
    To perform the requested operation(s), the 
    store must be temporarily dismounted which
    will make it inaccessible to any user.

  9. Click Yes to move the databases. When the operation is complete, the following confirmation message appears:
    The database files have been successfully moved.
