Manually Create the Topology

By default, Directory Access automatically discovers servers. It is strongly recommended that Directory Access automatically discover servers. The following procedure manually adds selcted servers to the Directory Access topology. Use this procedure to select Windows 2000 Server domain controllers, global catalog servers, and configuration domain controllers to add to the topology. You can add one, two, or all three types of servers to the topology.

To manually add servers to the topology:

  1. Start System Manager
    On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. Navigate to the server you want.

  3. Right-click the server you want, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Directory Access tab, select the type of servers you want to view from the Show list.

    Note   You cannot change the Automatically discover servers option when All Domain Controllers is selected in the Show list.

  5. Clear the Automatically discover servers check box. The current list of servers will clear.
  6. Warning   By default, Directory Access automatically discovers servers. It is strongly recommended that you keep this setting.

  7. Click Add or Remove to add or remove servers from the topology.
