You use Performance Monitor counters to monitor Instant Messaging activity. For this purpose, Instant Messaging provides several client-to-server and server-to-server counters to indicate whether the service is processing data. When these counters approach zero, Instant Messaging has little or no data to process (that is, few or no requested client connections) or the service is not functioning properly.
