Instant Messaging

Create an IIS Virtual Server

You must have one IIS (Internet Information Services) virtual server for each Instant Messaging Home Server you create. In most situations, you need only one Instant Messaging Home Server, and you can use the virtual server provided by the IIS snap-in, Default Web Site. When you need to install more than one Instant Messaging Home Server on a single machine, you must create an additional IIS virtual server for each additional Instant Messaging Home Server.

Important   When creating a new IIS virtual server for Instant Messaging, first determine the domain name to be used. If you intend to use this IIS virtual server as an Instant Messaging router, the domain name is the Instant Messaging domain that the router will service (for example, im.microsoft.com).

To create an IIS Virtual Server:

  1. Start Internet Services Manager
On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
  2. In Internet Information Services, right-click the computer on which the Instant Messaging router is to be installed, click New, and then click Web Site. This starts the Web Site Creation Wizard.
  3. As you step through the wizard, provide the following information:
  4. Click Finish to complete the wizard.
