Use a Proxy Server for Outbound Messages

You may need to direct Internet-bound instant messages through a proxy server.

To use a proxy server for outbound messages:

  1. Start System Manager
    On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. Navigate to Instant Messaging Settings.

    Global Settings

    1. Instant Messaging Settings
  3. Right-click Instant Messaging Settings, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Firewall Topology tab, click Use a proxy server for outbound requests.
  5. Under Address and Port, type the IP address (or DNS or machine name) and TCP port number, respectively, of the proxy server.
