Back Up and Restore Exchange

It is important to perform backups to protect your organization's information and messaging and collaboration system. You can use Backup to back up and restore Information Store, your System State, Key Management Service (KMS), and Site Replication Service (SRS), within your organization. Now that Exchange supports multiple databases for each server, if you want you can back up and restore a single database within a storage group. You are not required to backup all databases on a server if you only want to restore one database that contains a specific user's mailbox. Backup allows you to protect data from accidental loss or hardware and media failures by using removeable storage to back up and restore information located on any server in your organization.

Warning   The version of Backup that is provided with Windows 2000 cannot be used with Exchange. Read the Release Notes before performing a backup or a restore. The Release Notes contain the most up-to-date information about installing updates and fixes for Exchange 2000.
