Migrating to Exchange

Migrate from Novell GroupWise

You can migrate from Novell GroupWise 4.x or 5.x.

To migrate Novell GroupWise to Microsoft Exchange:

  1. Reduce the amount of data to be migrated, if possible.
  2. Create or select a current GroupWise user to use as a migration account. Be sure that the migration account has Read and Write permissions on the files and directories in which the post office and domain are located. The account must be in the same post office as the user accounts to be migrated. Also make sure each GroupWise user grants proxy access to this migration account. (The procedure is somewhat different for GroupWise 4.x and GroupWise 5.x.)
  3. For GroupWise 5.x migrations only, install the Novell NetWare client for Windows 2000 on the computer running Windows 2000 Server that is performing the migration.
  4. Note   The Novell client is required; Gateway (and Client) Services for NetWare does not work in this instance.

  5. Install the Novell GroupWise client version 4.x (for migrating GroupWise version 4.x) or GroupWise version 5.x (for migrating GroupWise version 5.x) on the computer running Windows 2000 Server that is performing the migration.
  6. Log on to GroupWise using the migration account created earlier. Again, be sure that the migration account has Read and Write permissions on the files and proxy permissions on the mailboxes.
  7. The GroupWise post office must not be accessed by GroupWise clients, administrator programs, or other agents or gateways during migration. This means that for GroupWise 5.x , you should shut down GroupWise Administrative Agent (ADA), Message Transfer Agent (MTA) and Post Office Agent (POA), and for GroupWise 4.x, you should shut down GroupWise Administrative Server (ADS), Message Transfer Agent (MTA) and Post Office Server (OFS).
  8. Stop the services used by Connector for Novell GroupWise (if you're using it) before migrating user accounts; otherwise, after the GroupWise accounts have been migrated, they can be deleted from the GroupWise system during directory synchronization with Active Directory. You can restart the connector after you've verified that users and their mail have migrated successfully.
  9. Run Migration Wizard. Select Migrate from Novell GroupWise 4.x or Migrate from Novell GroupWise 5.x.
  10. Verify that the migration was completed successfully before restarting the connector services.
