The following section explains the features, concepts, and
limitations that are new to Outlook Web Access.
Features
Exchange 2000 installs a new version of Outlook Web Access, which
is designed for increased performance and scalability. In addition
to major architectural changes, client performance and
functionality are also improved. The following are new features in
Outlook Web Access:
Support for Internet Explorer version 5.0. Internet
Explorer 5.0 provides an interface that is closer to the actual
Microsoft Outlook 2000 interface. Using Internet Explorer 5.0 with
Outlook Web Access is more efficient because, unlike other
browsers, Internet Explorer 5.0 offloads processing from the server
to the client.
Support for public folders containing contact and calendar
items. This feature supports public folders that contain
contacts and appointments.
Named URLs to reference items. Items in the information
store are now accessed using plain text addresses, such as
http://server/exchange/mailbox/inbox.
Support for multimedia messages. Outlook Web Access
enables you to place audio and video clips directly into a
message.
Limitations
Outlook Web Access is not a replacement for the full-featured
Outlook messaging client. The following Outlook features are not
supported in Outlook Web Access:
Offline use
Tasks
Journal
Printing templates
Outlook rules
Copying between public and private folders
Telephony options and user-defined fields when accessing
contacts
Mail features, such as the spelling checker, Do not deliver
before, and expiration options
Reminders and the capability to allow users to type and edit
directly in the Calendar view
