Managing Public Folders

Determining Public Folder Hierarchy Access

When you install Exchange, a default public folder hierarchy is created. All MAPI clients such as Microsoft Outlook can access this public folder hierarchy to read messages and store documents. You can create subfolders to reflect the departments in your organization. In addition to this default hierarchy, you can create alternate public folder hierarchies for applications or Web browsers to access. Because of their intended use, there are different access methods for the default public folder hierarchy than for alternate hierarchies that you create.

The general purpose of a public folder hierarchy is displayed on the General tab of a public folder root.

Use the following table to determine the appropriate client for a public folder hierarchy.
