Configuring Security

Change the Administrator Password

Once KMS has been installed and the service has been successfully started, you must type an administrator password before performing any task. KMS will also prompt you to type this password when you click any tab in the Key Manager Properties dialog box. This prevents unauthorized users from accessing or configuring KMS through an administrator's workstation.

Upon startup, the default administrator password is password. You should change the administrator password the first time you start KMS. Whenever a KMS administrator is added, they will be given their own administrator password. KMS administrators can change their passwords at any time.

Note   The administrator password should not be confused with the KMS Startup Password, which is only requested when you attempt to start KMS.

To change an administrator password:

  1. Start System Manager
On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. In the console tree, click Advanced Security.
  3. In the details pane, right-click Key Manager, and then click Properties.
  4. In the Key Management Service Login dialog box, type your password, and then click OK. The default password is password.
  5. In Key Manager Properties, click the Administrators tab. When prompted, type your password again.
  6. In the list of KMS administrators, choose the administrator whose password you would like to change, and then click Change Password.

Note   To change a password, whether it be for yourself or another administrator, you must know the current password.

  7. In Change Password, type the current password, and then type the new password. KMS passwords must be at least six characters long.
