Managing Exchange Servers

Concepts

You administer Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server using the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-ins System Manager and Computer Management. You may use additional MMC snap-ins for specific objects.

System Manager is a MMC console file named Exchange System Manager.msc. It provides a graphical two-pane view of Exchange objects with a console tree and a details pane. You can view the context menus of objects by right-clicking the objects, and you can move some objects using a drag-and-drop operation.

Computer Management is a Microsoft Windows 2000 administrative tool that includes an Exchange server container in its Services and Applications container. You can manage only Exchange server objects with Computer Management.

Each Exchange server has a Protocols container that contains the HTTP, Internet Message Access Protocol version 4 (IMAP4), Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP), Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3), Simple Message Transfer Protocol (SMTP), and X.400 protocol objects. Each object provides a virtual server to messaging clients using that protocol.

Exchange supports multiple mailbox stores and public folder stores contained in storage groups. A storage group contains one to five mailbox or public folder stores and a set of transaction log files.
