Troubleshooting

Common Issues

This section explains how to identify and correct errors that can occur when you are installing Exchange 2000. Use the following information to learn more about the problems you may encounter and how to resolve them.

What problem are you having?

When installing Exchange 2000, you receive the following error message: Setup failed while configuring registry entries for Exchange System Management Snap-ins (error 0xC103798A: An internal component has failed.) Additional information: The command regsvr32.exe -s maqadmin.dll failed, returning error code 3 (The system cannot find the path specified.).

Cause
If you previously installed any component of Exchange 5.5 on this server and did not completely uninstall it, the Exchange 5.5 version of the Exchmem.dll file will cause this error message to be displayed.
Solution
Before you run Exchange 2000 Setup, rename the existing Exchange Exchmem.dll to Exchmem.old. Exchange 2000 will then install the appropriate Exchmem.dll file during setup.

When attempting to install Exchange 2000 in an existing Exchange Server 5.5 site, you receive the following error message: Setup was unable to bind to the Exchange Server %S.

Cause
This error occurs when the account you use to start Exchange 2000 Setup does not have the permissions necessary to install Exchange 2000 in the existing Exchange 5.5 site. Exchange 2000 Setup requires service account permissions at the organization, site, and configuration levels for the Exchange Server 5.5 directory when you install it in an existing Exchange 5.5 site.
Solution
Ensure that the Windows 2000 account that you are using to start Exchange 2000 Setup has service account permissions at the organization, site, and configuration levels in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory.
More Information

To ensure that you have the correct permissions to install Exchange 2000 Server in an existing Exchange 5.5 site, install the Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program on the computer on which you are installing Exchange 2000 Server, and then attempt to administer servers in the Exchange 5.5 site by using the Administrator program. If you can start and run the Administrator program on the computer running Exchange Server 5.5, you should be able to install Exchange 2000 when you join the server to the Exchange Server 5.5 site.

Important   Remove the Exchange Server 5.5 Administrator program before running Exchange 2000 Setup.
