During the installation of Microsoft Exchange Server, the Microsoft Exchange Best Practices Analyzer performs the following operations:

• It determines whether Exchange Server 2010 is being installed.
  
  
• It examines the Windows registry to determine whether the base operating system is Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  
  
• It examines the registry to determine the edition of Windows on which Exchange is being installed.
  
  

If the Exchange Best Practices Analyzer determines that Exchange 2010 is being installed on a computer that is running Windows Web Server 2008 or Windows Web Server 2008 R2, the tool generates the following error message:

This computer is running Windows Web Server 2008 or Windows Web Server 2008 R2. Exchange Server 2010 is not supported on this operating system.

Exchange 2010 is not supported on computers that are running Windows Web Server 2008 or Windows Web Server 2008 R2.

To work around this issue, install Exchange 2010 on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:

• Windows Server 2008 Standard
  
  
• Windows Server 2008 Standard R2
  
  
• Windows Server 2008 Enterprise
  
  
• Windows Server 2008 Enterprise R2
  
  
• Windows Server 2008 Datacenter
  
  
• Windows Server 2008 Datacenter R2
