The Microsoft Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory directory service to determine the value of the serialNumber attribute for all objects that have an object class of msExchExchangeServer. If the string value includes "Version 5.5," the computer is running Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. If the string value includes "Version 6.0," the computer is running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. If the string value includes "Version 6.5," the computer is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. If the string value includes "Version 8.0," the computer is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.

The Exchange Analyzer also queries the CIM_Datafile Microsoft® Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) class to determine the value of the Version key for Emsmdb32.dll, the Exchange Transport Provider. The Version WMI key indicates the build number for this file.

Finally, the Exchange Analyzer queries the following registry entry to determine whether Exchange provider tracing has been configured and enabled.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Exchange Provider\Enable Tracing

The Exchange Analyzer displays an error message if the following conditions are true:

• The server is not running Exchange Server 2007
  
  
• The Version key for Emsmdb32.dll is 6.5.7233.47 or later versions
  
  
• The HKML\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Exchange Provider\Enable Tracing entry exists and is set to a value other than 0
  
  

This error indicates that Exchange Transport Provider Tracing is enabled on the computer.

Versions of the Exchange Transport Provider at version 6.5.7233.47 and later versions have built-in tracing features. A .ttd file enables tracing of the following programs:

• Any program that uses MAPI on the server that is running Exchange Server 2003
  
  
• Any program that is installed by using the Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools.
  
  

Exchange Transport Provider Tracing should only be enabled for active troubleshooting and might otherwise adversely affect typical server performance.

To disable Exchange provider tracing on Exchange Server 2003

1. Open a registry editor, such as Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.

2. Browse: HKML\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Exchange Provider\

3. In the right navigation pane:

   1. Right-click and delete the Enable Tracing subkey, or
      
      
   2. Double-click Enable Tracing.
      
      

4. Configure the Enable Tracing subkey with a value of 0.

5. Close Registry Editor.

6. Restart the Exchange Information Store service for these changes to take effect.
