The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool tries to read various properties of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual server instance from the Internet Information Services (IIS) metabase path:
/LM/SmtpSvc/<SMTP virtual server instance>
The Exchange Server Analyzer displays an error if the following conditions are true:
- The metabase query fails.
- Exchange Server is not running on Microsoft Windows NT® Server
4.0.
This error indicates that the Exchange Server Analyzer cannot connect to the IIS metabase.
The IIS metabase includes information that affects Exchange Server, such as protocol settings for HTTP, virtual directories for mailbox and mobile device access, and HTTP security settings.
To resolve this issue, verify the integrity of the metabase and that IIS is installed correctly.
To verify that the metabase is not corrupted and IIS is installed correctly, see the following resources:
- Microsoft Knowledge Base article 240225, "Description of
Adsutil and MetaEdit Utilities Used to Modify the Metabase"

Internet Information Services (IIS) on
