The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine the value for the offLineABServer attribute of the offline address book configuration object. The offLineABServer attribute is a single-valued distinguished name attribute that stores the distinguished name of the Exchange Server computer that is responsible for generating an offline address book.

The Exchange Server Analyzer also queries the Exchange_Server Microsoft Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) class to determine the value of the IsFrontEndServer key for the Exchange server. If the value for the IsFrontEndServer key is True, the Exchange server is acting as a front-end server.

If the Exchange Server Analyzer determines that a designated offline address book server is also a front-end server, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays an error message.

This error indicates that the nominated Exchange server for generating offline address books is a front-end server. If the designated offline address book server is also a front-end server, offline address book generation will fail. A new server should be nominated for this task. When a server running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server that uses Service Pack 2 or later is designated as a front-end server, the following services no longer run:

Front-end servers are designed to handle incoming client requests from Microsoft Office Outlook® Web Access, POP3, IMAP4, Exchange ActiveSync, Outlook Mobile Access, and Outlook clients that are configured to use RPC over HTTP. Front-end servers are also sometimes used to relay SMTP messages to internal Exchange servers.

To resolve this problem, it is recommended that you designate a back-end Exchange server as the offline address book server.

To correct this error

  1. Open Exchange System Manager

  2. Under Recipients, click Offline Address Lists.

  3. In the right pane, right-click Default Offline Address List and then click Properties.

    Note:
    Use the same procedure for any other offline address list that produces this message.

  4. On the General tab, under Offline address list server, click Browse, and then click the back-end Exchange server that you want to use.
