The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine the value of the serialNumber attribute for all objects that have an object class of msExchExchangeServer. If the string value includes Version 5.5, the computer is running Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5. If the string value includes Version 6.0, the computer is running Exchange 2000 Server. If the string value includes Version 6.5, the computer is running Exchange Server 2003.

If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds the value for serialNumber contains Version 5.5, an error is displayed.

This error indicates that the version of Exchange Server detected cannot be analyzed further by this version of the Exchange Server Analyzer.

The Exchange Server Analyzer depends on various, specific program interfaces that are unavailable in the detected version of Exchange Server.

To address this error, specify an Exchange Server that is running Exchange 2000 or a later version.

If you believe this rule has been triggered in error, verify that the value for the serialNumber attribute of the Exchange Server object in Active Directory is correctly set.

Caution:
If you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects when you use Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit, the LDP (ldp.exe) tool, or another Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3 client, you may cause serious problems. These problems may require that you reinstall Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003, Exchange Server 2003, or both. Modify Active Directory object attributes at your own risk.
To view the value of the serialNumber attribute
  1. Start ADSI Edit.

  2. Double-click the Configuration container, expand CN=Services, expand CN=Microsoft Exchange, and then expand CN=<ExchangeOrganizationName>.

  3. Expand CN=Administrative Groups, expand CN=<AdministrativeGroupName>, and then expand CN=Servers.

  4. Right-click the server object, and then click Properties.

  5. Double-click the serialNumber attribute to display its current value.
