The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool reads the following registry entry to determine if advanced diagnostic tracing has been enabled on the Exchange Server computer:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MosTrace\CurrentVersion\DebugAsyncTrace\EnabledTraces

If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds the EnabledTraces registry entry present and configured with any value other than 0, an error is displayed.

Advanced diagnostic tracing of Exchange Server transport and routing components can be accomplished using the Regtrace utility (Regtrace.exe). Regtrace is an especially useful tool for diagnosing and troubleshooting non-delivery reports (NDRs). The Regtrace utility can be found on the Exchange Server CD in the \Support\Utils\I386 folder.

The trace file is available at the location that is specified on the Output tab of the Regtrace utility. The default location for the file is C:\Trace.atf. The trace file is a binary-encoded file than contains debug-level information about the transport and routing components that are being traced. Because of this, Microsoft Product Support Services requires that customers send the trace files for internal analysis.

Unless you are actively troubleshooting a problem, Microsoft strongly cautions that having Regtrace enabled causes severe server performance degradation and should only be used for short periods of time under the strict guidance of Microsoft Product Support Services. In addition to performance, disk space for the trace file can be consumed at the rate of 10 or more megabytes (MB) per minute. To resolve this error, if you are not troubleshooting a problem, you can use Regtrace to disable tracing.

To disable advanced diagnostic tracing with Regtrace

  1. Copy Regtrace.exe from the Exchange Server CD to the Exchange Server computer.

  2. Execute Regtrace.exe on the Exchange Server computer. The Regtrace user interface will appear.

  3. On the Traces tab, clear all of the check boxes.

  4. Select the Output tab and select No Tracing.

  5. Click OK to save your changes and close the Regtrace utility.
