The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Microsoft Active Directory® directory service to determine the value of the msExchCurrentServerRoles attribute for each msExchExchangeServer object to determine which Exchange Server 2007 server roles are installed.

The Exchange Sever Analyzer then searches the following registry branch for the presence of the Start value.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SMTPSvc

The presence of the Start value for this branch indicates that the Internet Information Server (IIS) Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service is installed on the server.

If the Exchange Server Analyzer determines that either the Exchange 2007 Hub Transport server role or the Edge Transport server role is installed on a server that also has the IIS SMTP service installed, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays a warning.

The presence of both the IIS SMTP service and the Exchange 2007 Hub Transport or Edge Transport server roles on the same server may cause mail flow issues and we recommended that the IIS SMTP service be uninstalled.

To uninstall the IIS SMTP service using Add or Remove a Windows Component in Control Panel

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.

  3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.

  4. In the Components list click the Application Server check box.

  5. Click Details.

  6. Click Internet Information Services Manager.

  7. Click Details.

  8. Uncheck SMTP Service.

  9. Click OK.

  10. Click Next.

  11. Click Finish when the service is uninstalled.
