The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool reads the following registry entry to determine whether blind carbon copy (Bcc) journaling is enabled:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeTransport\Parameters\JournalBCC

If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds that the value for JournalBCC is set to 1, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays a non-default configuration message.

Bcc journaling is message-only journaling with the added ability to capture the Bcc recipients. When Bcc journaling is enabled, Exchange Server captures all recipients, including Bcc recipients, that are known at the originating server. If this recipient list includes hidden distribution lists, query-based distribution lists, or distribution lists that are expanded on another server, the recipients for these lists are not included in the journalized mail.

The Bcc journaling functionality is enabled by setting a registry key. To enable Bcc journaling on a specific server, you must first configure message-only journaling. The JournalBCC setting is not active when the following conditions exist:

• The JournalBCC registry is set to 1.
  
  
• Message-only journaling is not enabled on any of the databases on the same server.
  
  

Journaling messages can consume many disk, network, and CPU resources. Therefore, journaling requires thorough deployment planning. Journaling should be enabled only in the context of an overall journaling solution framework.

Ignore this non-default configuration message if the following conditions exist:

• Your business requires journaling.
  
  
• You have deployed a journaling solution framework.
  
  

Otherwise, you should turn off journaling functionality. By turning off journaling on the database, you disable journaling.

To turn off message-only journaling on a database

1. In Exchange System Manager, expand Servers, expand <your Exchange server>, expand <storage group>, and then right-click the mailbox store.

2. On the General tab, clear the check box Archive all messages sent or received by mailboxes on this store.

3. Wait 15 minutes for the Exchange store to apply changes. You do not have to restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.

If you do not want the Exchange Server Analyzer to display this message again, you must delete the JournalBCC registry key. Deleting the JournalBCC registry key is not required to disable journaling functionality.

To delete the JournalBCC registry key

1. Open a registry editor, such as Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.

2. Navigate to: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeTransport\Parameters\

3. In the right pane, locate and delete the JournalBCC value.

4. Close the registry editor.
