The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine the number of public folder hierarchies that have a value of 1 for the msExchPFTreeType attribute. A value of 1 for the msExchPFTreeType attribute indicates that a particular public folder hierarchy is the designated public folder hierarchy for MAPI clients. If the Exchange Server Analyzer determines that none of the public folder hierarchies in the Exchange organization has a value of 1 for the msExchPFTreeType attribute, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays an error.
This error indicates that no public folder hierarchy for MAPI clients exists in the organization. The absence of a public folder hierarchy for MAPI clients can cause problems. For example, the absence of a public folder hierarchy for MAPI clients may cause a failure to upgrade an Exchange Virtual Server that is running in a Microsoft Windows® server cluster.
To resolve this problem, you can use an Active Directory editing tool to set the value for the msExchPFTreeType attribute of the public folder hierarchy for MAPI clients to 1. The following tools are Active Directory editing tools:
- Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit
(AdsiEdit.msc)
- LDP (ldp.exe) tool
You should modify the MAPI public folder hierarchy only. If your Exchange organization includes application public folder hierarchies, make sure that you modify the attribute for the MAPI public folder hierarchy only.
After you have set the value for the msExchPFTreeType attribute of the MAPI public folder hierarchy to 1, you configure the mailbox stores on your Exchange servers to point to the MAPI public folder hierarchy as the default public folder store.
Caution: |
---|
If you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects when you use ADSI Edit, the LDP tool, or another Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3 client, you may cause serious problems. These problems may require that you reinstall Windows Server™ 2003, Exchange Server 2003, or both. Modify Active Directory object attributes at your own risk. |
-
Use an Active Directory editing tool to locate the public folder hierarchy objects in Active Directory. The public folder objects can be found at CN=Configuration, CN=Services, CN=Microsoft Exchange, CN=<OrganizationName>, CN=Administrative Groups, CN=<AdminGroupName>, CN=Folder Hierarchies
-
Change the msExchPFTreeType attribute by entering 1 as the new value.
-
Close the Active Directory editor.
-
Open Exchange System Manager.
-
To access Properties for each mailbox store, click Administrative Groups, expand your administrative group, expand Servers, expand your server, and expand your storage group. Then, right-click the mailbox store whose Properties you want to change, and select Properties.
-
On the General tab, for the Default public store field, click Browse.
-
Select the MAPI public folder hierarchy, and then click OK two times to save the changes.
-
Repeat steps 5-7 for each mailbox store.
