Occasionally, organizations that use Microsoft Exchange Server must integrate e-mail, directory, and calendar information with Lotus Notes. This situation can occur when companies merge or during a migration from Lotus Notes to Exchange.
Microsoft provides a tool for configuring directory synchronization and free/busy lookup interoperability between Lotus Notes and Exchange. Tools and associated guidance are available from the Resources for Moving to the Microsoft Collaboration Platform Web site.
You can configure directory synchronization between the Lotus Domino Directory and Active Directory directory service to be performed according to a schedule or on demand. Directory information is synchronized in one or both directories. The fields that are synchronized can be configured for greater customization.
Mail routing for e-mail messages and calendar items (such as assigned To Do items and appointment invitations) route between Lotus Domino 6.x and 7.x servers and Exchange 2007 servers by using SMTP mail routing. SMTP provides scalability and no additional tools to install, monitor, manage, and troubleshoot. Because Lotus Domino 5.x is not fully SMTP compliant, interoperability between Lotus Domino 5.x and Exchange Server 2003 requires a mail connector tool, which is available from the Microsoft Collaboration Platform Web site.
The Microsoft tools allow Lotus Notes and Microsoft Office Outlook users to perform free/busy lookup on each other's calendars. Users do not need to perform any special functions or tasks to display the free/busy information for other users, regardless of the other user's mail platform.
