A Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 computer that has the Client Access server role installed accepts connections to a variety of different clients. Software clients such as Microsoft Outlook Express and Eudora use Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) or Internet Message Access Protocol version 4rev1 (IMAP4) connections to communicate with the Exchange server. Hardware clients, such as mobile devices, use Exchange ActiveSync, POP3, or IMAP4 to communicate with the Exchange server. If users access their Inbox by using a client other than Microsoft Outlook, you must install the Client Access server role in your Exchange organization.
Exchange Server 2007 enables users who have mobile devices to synchronize mailbox data by using Exchange ActiveSync. Users can synchronize e-mail, contacts, calendars, and task folders. Synchronization with mailbox data by using Exchange ActiveSync requires that the user authenticate to the Client Access server over an HTTPS connection. After the connection is established, all information passes between the mobile device and a user's mailbox through the Client Access server.
Exchange ActiveSync mailbox policies let you apply a common set of policies or security settings to a user or a group of users.
Click Properties in the action pane to access the following tabs for the selected mailbox policy.
- General tab
-
Use the General tab to configure whether devices that cannot be provisioned are allowed and whether to allow attachments to be downloaded to devices.
- Password tab
-
Use the Password tab to specify whether passwords are required for client devices. If passwords are required, you can select from several security options.
