This topic provides information about how to troubleshoot issues that may occur when you use the Rendom.exe utility to rename an existing Windows Server 2003 domain.

When you use the Rendom.exe utility to rename an existing Windows Server 2003 domain, the following Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 services may not start:

• Microsoft Exchange EdgeSync

• Microsoft Exchange Information Store

• Microsoft Exchange System Attendant

• Microsoft Exchange Transport

This issue occurs because domain rename operations are not supported when Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 is installed in a Windows Server 2003 domain. If you rename the domain, and the domain contains computers are running Exchange 2007, the Exchange System Attendant service does not start.

Before You Begin

To perform this procedure, the account you use must be delegated membership in the local Administrators group. For more information about permissions, delegating roles, and the rights that are required to administer Exchange 2007, see Permission Considerations.

Resolution

To resolve the problem, use Rendom.exe to rename the domain to the original name. For more information about Windows Server 2003 domain rename tools, see Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Domain Rename Tools.
