The Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 data that you must back up depends on which server roles are installed on the server that is running Exchange. In addition, the data that you decide to back up as part of your disaster recovery strategy determines the recovery processes that you can perform. These tasks should be planned together.

One important strategy for protecting Exchange environments and data is to design redundancy throughout your system. For example, the use of multiple, redundant server roles can always be used to mitigate the negative effects of failures and disasters, and in some cases, deploying redundant server roles can provide sufficient fault tolerance to prevent interruptions in mail flow, as well as data and service availability.
