When you migrate mailboxes from an IMAP server to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, existing folders, and also the folder structure, are preserved. The folders are added under the root mailbox folder of the Exchange mailbox. If another folder already exists in the Exchange mailbox that has the same name as an IMAP mailbox folder, the contents of the IMAP folder will be merged with the contents of the existing Exchange folder as part of the migration.

Folder Mapping Table

The IMAP mailboxes that you are migrating may have folders that match the Exchange 2007 default folders, such as, Inbox, Sent Items, and so on. All content in these folders will be merged with the default folders during the migration process. If the IMAP mailbox source folders have different text names than the Exchange default folders, such as New Mail or Sent Mail, you can map the source folders to Exchange folders by using a mapping folder table.

The Microsoft Transporter Suite for Internet Mail installs a default folder mapping table in the form of an XML file. The folder mapping table provides a many-to-one list of the different IMAP folders that map to Exchange default folders. The following table lists the mappings that are contained in the default folder mapping table.

If your source folder names are not listed in the default folder mapping file, you must create a custom folder map. For more information, see How to Create a Custom Folder Map.
