To remove an Edge Server or Edge Server pool, you must remove the definitions of any associated Front End pool, Front End Server, or Mediation Server. If you have branch site locations that have either Survivable Branch Appliances or Survivable Branch Servers, you must resolve the dependencies from the branch servers. The following topics describe the procedures you need to perform to remove the Edge Server or Edge Server pool.

Important:
When you remove Edge Servers, consider the following:
  • Federation   When you remove an Edge Server or Edge Server pool in a deployment that you have federation partners, you will break the federation. Your federated partners create configurations in their deployment to trust your Edge Server or Edge Server pool. Removing the Edge Servers breaks this trust. If you are going to continue federating with these partners, you must coordinate with your partners to move their federation configuration to another Edge Server or Edge Server pool in your deployment. If you and your partners reconfigure the federation configuration before removing the current Edge Server or Edge Server pool, you avoid downtime. Also, this applies to a deployment in which you have deployed a federation with public instant messaging provider, such as MSN.

  • Federation routes   When you enable federation routes at the site level, and the Edge Server or Edge Server pool is defined as the route out of your deployment, you must reconfigure the federation route before removing the servers if you intend to continue providing federation for your deployment.
