By default the computer name of an Edge Server that is not joined to a domain is a short name, not a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). However, Topology Builder uses FQDNs, not short names, and the internal name on the Edge Server must match the FQDN used by Topology Builder, so you must change the short name to an FQDN by adding a Domain Name System (DNS) suffix to the name of each Edge Server that is not joined to a domain. Use the following procedure to add the DNS suffix to the computer name.

To add the DNS suffix to the computer name on an Edge Server that is not joined to a domain

  1. On the computer, click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

  2. Under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings, click Change settings.

  3. On the Computer Name tab, click Change.

  4. In Computer Name/Domain Changes, click More.

  5. In DNS Suffix and NetBIOS Computer Name, in Primary DNS suffix of this computer, type the name of your internal domain (for example, corp.contoso.com), and then click OK three times.

  6. Restart the computer.

    Note:
After you complete these steps, DNS load balancing is operational.
