Microsoft provides cabinet files (.cab) that contain software updates for devices on the Microsoft Help and Support website http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=137246. As a best practice, you should check this site regularly, at least every three months, for updates that apply to your organization"s devices. You can determine which updates apply to your devices by checking the Device Update Web service audit logs to see what versions the devices are currently running. For details, see Auditing Update Requests.

New updates that you obtain from Microsoft Help and Support should apply to your organization’s devices, corresponding to their type, brand, model, and language. In most cases, the revision should be more recent than the revision for the last update the devices received.

For example, if your organization uses Microsoft Lync 2010 Phone Edition devices with a US English display language, and a software version of 3.5.6887, you should obtain an update with the following characteristics:

Device type Brand Model Locale Version

Microsoft Lync 2010 Phone Edition

Microsoft

CPE R2

DV3

ENU

Later than 3.5.6887, such as 3.5.6897.0

After you locate the update .cab files that you want, you download the files to your system. From there, you can upload them to Device Update Web service.

When a .cab file is uploaded, its data is written to the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) data store, and the files it contains are stored in the appropriate file system folders in the DeviceUpdates folder. They are also listed on the Pending Updates tab of the Device Update Web service on the Lync Server Control Panel. When you approve updates, they appear on the Deployed Updates tab, and any device that connects to Device Update Web service and requires that update can retrieve it. Until you approve an update, however, only test devices can retrieve it.

After uploading the updates, you should test them prior to deploying them to your organization’s devices.

Note:
DeviceUpdates Folder Location. For Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Standard Edition, device update files and Device Update Web service audit log files are stored on the local computer in %ProgramFiles\Microsoft Lync Server 2010\DeviceUpdateFiles\DeviceUpdates. For Office Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Enterprise Edition, you can find the DeviceUpdates folder on the shared updates folder that was created during deployment for client and device update files.
