The Director has an inbound dependency from the Edge Server or Edge Server pool. The dependency is defined as the Next hop pool on the Edge Server configuration in Topology Builder. To remove the Director or Director pool, you must redirect the next hop dependency to another Director or a Front End Server in your deployment. If you do not remove the next hop dependency, an error message appears.

To redirect the Edge Server next hop server

  1. Log on to the computer where Topology Builder is installed as a member of the Domain Admins group and the RTCUniversalServerAdmins group.

  2. Start Topology Builder: Click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Lync Server 2010, and then click Lync Server Topology Builder.

  3. When Topology Builder prompts you to select the source of the Lync Server 2010 topology documents, click Download Topology from existing deployment, and then Click OK.

  4. In Save Topology As, type a name for the topology document in File name, and then click Save.

  5. In Topology Builder, expand Edge pools, click the Edge Server or pool, right-click the Edge Server or pool, and then click Edit Properties.

  6. In Edit properties, click Next hop, select one of the other possible options in Next hop pool, and then click OK.

    Important:
If the Director or Director pool is used as a global federation route, you need to change the route to another Director or Director pool or to an Edge Server that is marked for federation.
  7. Review the Domain Name System (DNS) records for SRV or other records that might need modification when you remove a Director.
