This topic explains several options for configuring e-mail interoperability between Domino and Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.

When planning e-mail interoperability between Lotus Domino andExchange 2007, take time to consider how e-mail will flow from the Internet and between the two platforms.

One option is to configure public MX records to route mail to one server and then route mail to its destination server internally. Another option is to configure multiple delivery points for mail being routed from the Internet.

Your options vary depending on whether there is a single DNS domain name for the environment (for example, contoso.com), or multiple DNS domain names for the environment (for example, contoso.com and fabrikam.com).

Note:
Lotus Domino 5 is not supported for SMTP mail routing because it does not support native MIME or iCal. Implement mail routing between Lotus Domino 5 and Exchange 2007 by using the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Connector for Lotus Notes.

Shared Domain Name

When a single DNS domain name is in use throughout an organization, the Domino and Exchange servers and users can be segregated via subdomains. For example, separate sub-domains can be created named exchange.contoso.com and domino.contoso.com. Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 users' e-mail addresses reference @exchange.contoso.com while Lotus Notes users' e-mail addresses reference @domino.contoso.com. This simplifies e-mail routing; mail addressed to exchange.contoso.com routes to an Exchange 2007 server, while mail addressed to domino.contoso.com routes to a Lotus Domino server.

Figure 1 shows one way to configure an e-mail topology when there is a single domain name. Public MX records are configured to route all Internet e-mail addressed to the contoso.com domain to an Exchange 2007 Edge Transport server. That server then routes e-mail addressed to exchange.contoso.com to the destination Exchange server. E-mail addressed to domino.contoso.com is forwarded to the Exchange server that is configured to route e-mail to the domino.contoso.com domain. The mail is then routed to the appropriate destination server.

An alternative option for single domain environments is to configure public MX records for exchange.contoso.com and domino.contoso.com. E-mail is then routed directly to Domino or Exchange servers, which then route the mail to the appropriate destination server. Figure 2 displays this option.

Separate Domain Name

When multiple DNS domains are implemented in an organization (such as after a merger or acquisition), there are additional topology considerations.

In Figure 3, public MX records for contoso.com and fabrikam.com both point to the same Exchange Server 2007 Edge Transport server, which is configured to accept mail for both domains. This forces all incoming Internet e-mail for both domains to route directly to the Edge Transport server. This then routes mail addressed to fabrikam.com to the designated Lotus Domino server and mail addressed to contoso.com is sent to the appropriate Exchange server. Those servers then route the mail to the appropriate destination server.

Another option for organizations with multiple domain names is to set public MX records to route Internet mail addressed to one domain name to a Lotus Domino server and mail addressed to a different domain name to an Exchange Edge Transport server.

Figure 4 displays this type of configuration. E-mail addressed to fabrikam.com routes to a Lotus Domino server and mail addressed to contoso.com routes to an Edge Transport server. Those servers then route the mail to the appropriate destination server.
