The Communicator Mobile for Java client software is a small, lightweight application that is optimized for mobility scenarios. The client software can be downloaded over the air or installed directly to a device tethered to a computer. The Communicator Mobile for Java client is supported in an Office Communications Server 2007 R2 deployment, and it requires that the Communicator Web Access server be deployed. This section provides the information and procedures needed to install Communicator Mobile for Java.

Prerequisites

The following are prerequisites for installing the Communicator Mobile for Java client software:

  • Communicator Web Access and other server components. Communicator Mobile for Java leverages the features in the Communicator Web Access server, so you must deploy Communicator Web Access if you want to deploy Communicator Mobile for Java. You must also install the other server components. For details about the required server components, see Communicator Web Access Supportin the Planning and Architecture documentation.

  • Communicator Mobile component. The Communicator Mobile component is required for server-side support of Communicator Mobile for Java. When you install the Communicator Web Access server, the Communicator Mobile for Java component is automatically installed. For details, see Deploying the Communicator Mobile Component.

  • Mobile phones. Communicator Mobile for Java can be installed on the following mobile phones:

    • Nokia S60

    • Nokia S40

    • Motorola RAZR V3xx

    Each of the mobile phones must also meet the following prerequisites:

    • Capable of running Java applications greater than 512 KB, and with a heap size of 2 MB.

    • Mobile Information Device Profile 2.0 (MIDP 2.0).

    • Connected Limited Device Configuration 1.1 (CLDC 1.1).

    • Screen resolution:

      240x320 for Nokia S40 and Motorola RAZR V3xx phones.

      240X 320 or 320x240 for Nokia S60 phones.

    • Data-connection-enabled (GPRS, Edge, or 3G connection) mobile device. Subscription to an unlimited data plan on the mobile device is recommended, because the client and server will be exchanging messages even when they are in an idle state.

Installing Communicator Mobile for Java Clients

To install Communicator Mobile phones you download Communicator Mobile for Java from the URL provided by your system administrator. You can either download it directly onto your phone or you can download it to your computer and then copy it to the phone. Use the appropriate procedure in this section to do the following:

  • Install or upgrade Communicator Mobile for Java directly to the phone.

  • Install or upgrade Communicator Mobile for Java on Nokia phones from the computer.

  • Install or upgrade Communicator Mobile for Java on Motorola phones from the computer.

Only a selected set of mobile phone models are supported for Communicator Mobile for Java. For a complete list of supported models, see Supported Clientsin the Supported Topologies and Infrastructure documentation. If the phone model is not in the list, Communicator Mobile for Java client is currently not supported for that phone.

To install or upgrade Communicator Mobile for Java directly to the phone

  1. From your phone, go to the URL provided by your system administrator.

  2. Select your telecom carrier and supported phone model from the drop-down list.

  3. Choose the download location for a mobile browser.

  4. In the dialog box that opens, click Save to Diskto save the Communicator Mobile for Java client compressed file with a .zip file name extension. When you install the JAR file, it is automatically placed in the Applications folder.

To install or upgrade Communicator Mobile for Java on Nokia phones from the computer

  1. From your computer, go to the URL provided by your system administrator.

  2. Select your telecom carrier and supported phone model from the drop-down list.

  3. Choose the download location for a computer browser.

  4. In the dialog box that opens, click Save to Diskto save the Communicator Mobile for Java client .zip file. When you install the JAR file, it is automatically placed in the Applications folder.

  5. Extract the .zip file, and then put the two Communicator Mobile for Java client files (JAD and JAR) into a single folder.

  6. Connect the phone to the computer, and then select the JAR file to install the application using Nokia PC Suite. Nokia PC Suite is free computer software that enables you to connect your Nokia device to a computer and access mobile content.   7. You can download the files from your computer to your phone using either a cable or a Bluetooth device. First download the JAD file to a directory on the mobile phone. Then download the JAR file to the same directory to complete the installation.

To install or upgrade Communicator Mobile for Java on Motorola phones from the computer

  1. From your computer, go to the URL provided by your system administrator.

  2. Select your telecom carrier and supported phone model from the drop-down list.

  3. Choose the download location for a computer browser.

  4. In the dialog box that opens, click Save to Diskto save the Communicator Mobile for Java client .zip file. When you install the JAR file, it is automatically placed in the Applications folder.

  5. To install Communicator Mobile for Java on Motorola phones, you use the free Motorola MIDWay Tool (available at the Motorola website, https://developer.motorola.com/docstools/othertools/). You may need to create an account to get this tool.

  6. Connect your USB cable to your computer. Do not connect the other end to your phone now.

  7. On your Motorola V3xx RAZR device, click Main Menu, click Settings, and then click Select.

  8. Click Java Settings, click Select, and then click Java App Loader.

  9. When you see the message "Insert cable now,” connect the other end of the cable to the phone. It will display the message "JAL link active.”

  10. Open the MIDway exe file. If you get the message "Cannot open serial port! Would you like to change MIDway settings?” you must configure the communication settings. Click Yes.

  11. To determine the correct port number, open My Computer.

  12. Click Properties, click Device Manager, expand Modems, select and then right-click the Motorola USB, click Properties, and then on the Modemtab, note the port number (for example, COM13).

  13. In the MIDway application, set the COM number to this number. Now you can open the MIDway window.

  14. Click File, click Open JAD, browse to where your Communicator Mobile JAD file is located, and then open it.

  15. When the details of the application are displayed, click File, and then click Send JAD.

  16. The following text appears:

    • Opening JAD file.............[OK]

    • Connecting the phone.........[OK]

    • Transmitting data blocks.....[OK]

    • Completing transmission......[OK]
