Communicator Web Access supports two different connectivity protocols: HTTP and HTTPS. Of the two, HTTPS is preferred because it is the more secure protocol. Among other things, HTTPS encrypts all of the traffic between the server and the browser. You must specify a connectivity type when you create a virtual server. However, you can use the Communicator Web Access snap-in to change that connectivity type.

In addition to the connectivity type, you can specify the IP address that the virtual server is associated with, as well as the port used by the virtual server. If you try to assign a port that is already in use, a message appears stating that the port is reserved. You need to select a new, unused port before you can continue. Note that, if you change the port used by a virtual server you must make sure that this same port is open on your firewall. This port will automatically be opened for you any time you install a new virtual server. However, the port will not be opened for you if you make a change to an existing virtual server. Instead, you will have to modify the firewall yourself.

Note:
Virtual servers can share the same IP address as long as they use different ports.

If you make any changes to the connectivity settings the virtual server in question will automatically be stopped. You will need to restart the virtual server before users will be able to access the site.
