Office Communications Server 2007 R2 uses Conference Directory objects to assign a unique public switched telephone network (PSTN) conference ID to each dial-in conference Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and locate a Web conference by using its PSTN conference ID. In Office Communications Server 2007 R2, a Conference Directory is created as a service on each Front End Server in each pool when the pool is created. You can reassign a Conference Directory to a pool when you move it from another pool (for example, when a pool must be deactivated or removed). A Conference Directory can become unassigned if the pool to which it was assigned is forcefully deactivated while the Conference Directory is still assigned to the pool. When a pool is in scheduled maintenance, a Conference Directory is unreachable, but not unassigned.

By creating a Conference Directory on each pool, Office Communications Server distributes the authority to assign PSTN conference IDs to all pools in a deployment. Each Conference Directory has a unique numeric ID, which is encoded as part of the PSTN conference ID that the user enters from the phone. The directory uses the remaining portion of the PSTN meeting ID to identify the specific conference of interest, which the directory maps to a conference URI. As such, PSTN conference IDs are encoded to indicate the pool on which the dial-in conference was scheduled. When a conference is scheduled and assigned a corresponding PSTN conference ID, the pool that generates the conference is also assigned to host the conference. The Front End Server can locate a conference URI by using the conference ID. The mapping for a particular dial-in conference ID to a conference URI is owned by the pool on which the conference was originally scheduled. Typically, this is the conference organizer’s home pool. However, if the organizer is moved to another pool after scheduling a conference, the conference will move with the organizer, but the conference ID mapping continues to be assigned to the original pool. The organizer’s current home pool also retains a copy of the conference ID to increase availability in case the organizer is moved across a wide area network (WAN) boundary.
