Managing Recipient Settings

Deploying Recipient Update Service

You must have a Recipient Update Service for each domain in your organization. In addition, Recipient Update Service must be run from an Exchange 2000 server.

Ideally, Recipient Update Service is run from an Exchange 2000 server installed in the domain being serviced. Since installing an Exchange 2000 server in each domain may not be possible, you must create a new Recipient Update Service for each domain that does not have an Exchange 2000 server and does have recipients. For each Recipient Update Service thus created, an Exchange 2000 server from another domain is selected to run Recipient Update Service.

To create a new Recipient Update Service responsible for a domain where an Exchange 2000 server is not installed, you must first run setup with the /domainprep switch (setup /domainprep) on a Windows 2000 server in the domain where Exchange 2000 is not installed. For more information about the DomainPrep utility, see Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Planning and Installation.

The deployment of the Recipient Update Service depends on two factors: the presence of an Exchange 2000 server on every domain in your organization and the presence of recipients on the domain.

Exchange Server Deployment Environments and Strategies

During setup, Exchange 2000 creates a Recipient Update Service for the domain. If an Exchange 2000 server is installed in every domain of your organization, run Recipient Update Service from an Exchange 2000 server in each domain.

If an Exchange 2000 server is not installed in every domain of your organization, perform the following tasks:
