Managing Recipient Settings

Configuring Recipient Update Service

During setup, Exchange 2000 creates a Recipient Update Service for the domain. The first Exchange 2000 server installed on the domain becomes the server responsible for updating the address lists for the domain. If other Exchange 2000 servers are installed in the domain, additional Recipient Update Service objects are not created because one currently exists. You can also designate another Exchange 2000 server to be responsible for running the Recipient Update Service.

Interval Updates

Exchange 2000 uses Recipient Update Service to update Active Directory objects with address list membership information. During an update interval, Recipient Update Service searches and marks the Active Directory objects that match the filter rules specified for each address list.

You may select a pre-set update interval or customize an address list update schedule. If you customize an address list update schedule, select update intervals that allow enough time for address list generation to complete before the next update begins. For example, if you specify three updates in a 24-hour period and it takes four hours to update the address lists, there must be at least four hours between each update.

It may be necessary to temporarily set an update interval to Never when testing a server or when migrating address list generation responsibilities from one server to another.

Warning   The recipient update service must process recipient additions and updates in the domain, or a domain will not have its address lists updated properly. If you select Never run, the address list and other critical attributes, such as e-mail addresses, will not be updated.

Minimizing Network Strain

Since processing is required to generate and update address lists for your organization, it is best to run Recipient Update Service from an Exchange 2000 server that is also a domain controller for the domain. This eliminates the network strain that results when the Recipient Update Service updates address lists over the network from an Exchange 2000 server that is not a domain controller.
