It is possible to change the KMS Startup Password in Exchange
2000. This is the password that must be supplied each time KMS is
started.
This feature enables you to change the Startup Password location
that you chose during KMS installation. For example, if you
chose to write down your Startup Password when you installed KMS,
you can use this procedure to keep it on a floppy disk instead.
Note After you create a new
Startup Password, previous passwords will not be valid.
On the Start menu, point to
Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click
System Manager.
In the console tree, click Advanced Security.
In the details pane, right-click Key Manager, point to
All Tasks, and then click Change Startup
Password.
In the Key Management Service Login dialog box, type
your password, and then click OK. The default password is
password.
Note You will have to re-type
your password each time you try to perform a task, or click a tab
in the Key Manager Properties dialog box.
In Change Startup Password, you can choose one of the
following locations for your new Startup Password:
To record the password manually, click Display this password
once. This is the default, and is a more secure option. You
must write the password down and keep it in a safe place. If you
lose this password, you will not be able to start KMS.
To store the new Startup Password on removable disks, click
Write this password to a removable (floppy) disk and create a
backup copy. With this option, you create a backup copy of the
password. You should store both disks in secure, separate places.
One of these disks will must be inserted each time you start
KMS.
Note In order for the new
Startup Password to take effect, you may need to stop and restart KMS.
