The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine the value for the msExchExchangeServer attribute for each Exchange Server object in the organization. The Exchange Server Analyzer uses the results of this query to determine the total number of servers in the organization that are running Exchange Server 2003. The Exchange Server Analyzer also queries the CIM_Datafile Microsoft Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) class to determine whether Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter is installed on all the Exchange Server 2003 servers in the organization. If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds that Intelligent Message Filter is not installed on one or more servers running Exchange Server 2003, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays a best practice message.
Intelligent Message Filter identifies messages that are likely to be unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE). In a typical Exchange Server 2003 topology, Intelligent Message Filter is installed on gateway servers to filter incoming Internet e-mail messages. If you use a non-Microsoft e-mail system as your Internet gateway server, you should install Intelligent Message Filter on the Exchange bridgehead server that accepts incoming Internet e-mail messages from your gateway servers.
To install Intelligent Message Filter, use an account that has local administrative rights and a member of a group that has been assigned the Exchange Administrator role.
