The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine whether the heuristics attribute has been configured to enable envelope journaling. By default, the heuristics attribute is not configured. If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds that the heuristics attribute is set to 512, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays a non-default configuration message.

Envelope journaling permits you to archive P1 message headers. The P1 message header is the address information that is used by message transfer agents (MTAs) to route mail. This address information includes information about the recipients who actually received the message, including blind carbon copy (Bcc) recipients and recipients from distribution groups. Envelope journaling delivers messages that are flagged to be archived by using an envelope message that contains a journal report and the original message. The original message is delivered as an attachment. The body of the journal report contains the transport envelope data of the archived message.

To enable Bcc journaling on a given server, you must first configure message-only journaling at the database level. The heuristics attribute is not active when the following conditions exist:

Journaling messages can consume many disk, network, and CPU resources. Therefore, journaling requires thorough deployment planning. Journaling should be enabled only in the context of an overall journaling solution framework.

Ignore this non-default configuration message if the following conditions exist:

Otherwise, you should turn off journaling functionality.

To turn off message-only journaling on a database
  1. In Exchange System Manager, expand Servers, expand <your Exchange server>, expand <storage group>, and then right-click the mailbox store.

  2. On the General tab, clear the check box, Archive all messages sent or received by mailboxes on this store.

  3. Wait 15 minutes for the Exchange store to apply changes. You do not have to restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.

If you do not want the Exchange Server Analyzer to display this message again, you must disable the heuristics attribute. Disabling the heuristics attribute is not required to disable journaling functionality.

You can disable envelope journaling by using the E-Mail Journaling Advanced Configuration tool (Exejcfg.exe). You can run the tool from any server with access to Active Directory, but it is recommended that you run the tool from a domain controller.

To obtain the E-Mail Journaling Advanced Configuration tool and the documentation, download the tools package at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=33122. The E-Mail Journaling Advanced Configuration tool can be used in Exchange 2000 Server environments and Exchange Server 2003 environments.

To disable the heuristics attribute
  1. Download and unzip the E-Mail Journaling Advanced Configuration tool to a directory of your choice.

  2. Open a command prompt.

  3. Go to the directory where you installed the E-Mail Journaling Advanced Configuration tool.

  4. Type the following command to disable envelope journaling:

    exejcfg -d
