The Microsoft Exchange Analyzer Tool reads the following registry entry to verify the existence of the Services string type value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Setup

If the Exchange Analyzer finds that the Services string type value is missing or inaccessible, the Exchange Analyzer displays an error.

This error indicates that the Services string type value, which is used to hold the path to the Exchange installation root is missing or inaccessible. The absence of the path to the Exchange installation root may cause a failure to initialize critical drivers and protocols which in turn will cause the Exchange information store and dependent services to fail upon startup.

To address this error, follow the guidance in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 285116, "Exchange Store Does Not Start: Errors 7024, 1026, 9542, and 5000" (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=3052&kbid=285116).
