Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) setup cannot continue because the attempt to install the clustered mailbox server failed.

Under the specific conditions found in this environment, Exchange Server 2007 SP1 setup requires that a computer account with the intended name for the clustered mailbox server be enabled in the local Active Directory site and a Network Name resource not be associated with it when Exchange Server 2007 SP1 setup is run.

The specific conditions found in this environment are either:

Scenario 1
  1. Setup was run with the /newCMS option.

  2. Exchange Server is being installed on a computer running the Windows Server 2003 operating system.

  3. The domain controller with the primary domain controller (PDC) role is located outside of the local Active Directory site.

  4. A computer object associated with the intended clustered mailbox server name does not exist or is not enabled in the local Active Directory site.

Scenario 2
  1. Setup was run with the /newCMS option.

  2. Exchange Server is being installed on a computer running the Windows Server 2003 operating system.

  3. The domain controller with the primary domain controller (PDC) role is located outside of the local Active Directory site.

  4. A computer object associated with the intended clustered mailbox server name exists and is enabled in the local Active Directory site.

  5. There is a Network Name resource associated with the clustered mailbox server name.

To address this issue, do one of the following:

To address the conditions met in Scenario 1

  2. Grant Full access permissions to the cluster service account for the computer account created or enabled.

  3. Rerun Exchange Server 2007 SP1 setup.

To address the conditions met in Scenario 2
  1. Delete the Network Name resource associated with the clustered mailbox server name.
