The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool reads the following registry entry to determine the version of the Microsoft Windows® operating system that is running on the Exchange server:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Note:
A CurrentVersion value of 4.0 indicates the computer is running Microsoft Windows NT® Server 4.0. A value of 5.0 indicates the computer is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. A value of 5.2 indicates the computer is running Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003.

The Exchange Server Analyzer also queries the Win32_OperatingSystem Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) class to determine the value of the ServicePackMajorVersion key.

Finally, the Exchange Server Analyzer queries the Win32_Service WMI class to determine whether the ClusSvc service is started.

The Exchange Server Analyzer displays a best practice configuration message if the following conditions exist:

It is recommended that you evaluate the updates and hotfixes that are available and determine whether they might resolve problems in your environment.
