The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool tries to read various properties of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual server instance from the Internet Information Services (IIS) metabase path:

/LM/SmtpSvc/<SMTP virtual server instance>

The Exchange Server Analyzer displays an error if the following conditions are true:

This error indicates that the Exchange Server Analyzer cannot connect to the IIS metabase.

The IIS metabase includes information that affects Exchange Server, such as protocol settings for HTTP, virtual directories for mailbox and mobile device access, and HTTP security settings.

To resolve this issue, verify the integrity of the metabase and that IIS is installed correctly.

To verify that the metabase is not corrupted and IIS is installed correctly, see the following resources:

If the guidance in these resources does not resolve the issue, you may have to uninstall and then reinstall IIS.

To uninstall IIS using Add or Remove a Windows Component in Control Panel
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.

  3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.

  4. In the Components list click the Application Server check box.

  5. Click Details.

  6. Click Internet Information Services Manager.

  7. Click Next.

  8. Click Finish when IIS is uninstalled.

To install IIS using Control Panel
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.

  3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.

  4. In the Components list click the Application Server check box.

  5. Click Details.

  6. Click the Internet Information Services Manager check box.

  7. Click OK until you are returned to the Windows Component Wizard.

  8. Click Next, and then complete the Windows Component Wizard.
