The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool reads the following registry entry to determine the maximum size of the Application log file:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Application\MaxSize

If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds that the value for MaxSize is less than 41,943,040 bytes (40 megabytes ), the Exchange Server Analyzer displays a best practice message.

By default, the maximum log size for the Application log file is 16,777,216 bytes (16384 KB) for Windows Server 2003 and 524288 (512 KB) for Windows 2000 Server. For computers that are running Exchange Server, the best practice is to set the maximum size of the Application log file at 40 MB (entered as 40960KB) or more. By increasing the Application log file size, you preserve more application events. The additional event information helps when you troubleshoot.

To increase the maximum size of the Application log
  1. Open the Event Viewer Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.

  2. Right-click the Application log and then click Properties.

  3. On the General tab, under Log size, enter 40960 or more in the Maximum log size box, and then click OK.
